Prenatal & Postpartum Care

Prenatal and Postpartum

We support healthy pregnancy and natural birth.

“At week 33 of my pregnancy, my baby was in the breech position, which left me feeling disheartened and I spent several days in tears because I wanted to avoid a cesarean delivery. My gynecologist decided to monitor me for an additional three weeks, hoping the baby would turn into the vertex position. However, if the baby didn’t reposition, I would be scheduled for a direct C-section the next day.
Fortunately, my doula recommended Inspired Chiropractic, and with just three chiropractic visits, my baby miraculously turned head down and engaged in the proper position. As a result, I was able to deliver my baby girl naturally within just an hour. I am incredibly grateful to Inspired Chiropractic for their assistance. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

1. Why Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?

Chiropractic care during pregnancy supports optimal baby positioning and healthier birth outcomes by promoting proper pelvic balance in the mother.

When the pelvis is misaligned, the ligaments that support the pelvis and uterus may develop increased tension. This imbalance can alter the uterine environment, potentially limiting the space available for the baby to move and position comfortably.

From the baby’s perspective, increased tension in the uterine walls may feel like a tightening space, similar to stretched bedsheets, restricting natural movement. Gentle, pregnancy-specific chiropractic adjustments help restore pelvic alignment, reduce ligament tension, and improve uterine balance. This creates a more optimal environment for the baby to move freely and assume the best possible position throughout pregnancy.

2. What Is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). It is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment designed for pregnant women, with the purpose of supporting optimal pelvic balance and fetal positioning throughout pregnancy.

The primary goal of the Webster Technique is to reduce the effects of spinal subluxation and/or sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction. By addressing these imbalances, neuro-biomechanical function in the sacral and pelvic regions may be improved, helping the body adapt more effectively to the physical changes of pregnancy.

Many women seek care from ICPA-certified chiropractors and choose the Webster Technique at various stages of pregnancy. This gentle, pregnancy-specific adjustment aims to reduce interference to the nervous system an essential component in supporting healthy physiological function for both mother and baby. When a mother’s body is functioning at its best, it creates a more supportive environment for optimal fetal development.

By helping to balance the pelvic bones, muscles, and ligaments, and by promoting normal physiological function, the Webster Technique helps create the conditions that support a more natural birth process.
Chiropractic care, including the Webster Technique, may contribute to safer and more comfortable birth experiences.

3. What are the Benefits of Prenatal Chiropractic Care?

Prenatal chiropractic care is designed to support the body’s natural ability to adapt to the physical and neurological changes of pregnancy. Many expectant mothers choose chiropractic care as part of a holistic approach to pregnancy wellness and birth preparation.

Commonly reported benefits include:
* Improved adaptability to physical and postural stress during pregnancy
* Support in managing pregnancy-related symptoms such as nausea
* Enhanced pelvic balance to support a smoother labour and delivery process
* Reduced biomechanical factors that may contribute to birth complications
* Relief from common pregnancy-related pain and discomfort, including back and pelvic pain
* Support for optimal baby positioning throughout pregnancy
* Quicker and smooth delivery (less pain is reported)

More women are discovering the value of chiropractic care during pregnancy. Chiropractors work with the body’s natural design and function, supporting a healthier pregnancy experience and your goal of a safer, more comfortable birth, helping mothers prepare for a healthier, more confident birth experience.

4. Can Chiropractic Care Help with a Breech Baby?

Chiropractic care does not manually turn a breech baby. Instead, pregnancy-specific techniques such as the Webster Technique, focus on improving pelvic balance and reducing tension in the muscles and ligaments surrounding the uterus. This may help create a more balanced uterine environment that allows the baby the opportunity to move into an optimal position naturally.

A research study published in 2002 reported a 92% success rate of babies turning to a head-down (vertex) position following the use of the Webster Technique. The study also suggested that the Webster Technique may be particularly beneficial during the eighth month of pregnancy, a stage when breech presentation is less likely to resolve spontaneously and when external cephalic version (ECV) may be less effective or not indicated.

By addressing biomechanical and neurological factors that may contribute to intrauterine constraint, chiropractic care aims to support the body’s natural processes rather than force a positional change.

Disclaimer: The Webster Technique does not involve direct manipulation of the baby and does not guarantee fetal repositioning. Individual results may vary.

5. Is Chiropractic Safe for Pregnant Women?
Yes!

The Webster Technique is a gentle, safe, and effective chiropractic adjustment specifically designed for pregnancy. It uses a combination of assisted drop-piece adjustments and soft tissue release techniques to target the muscles and ligaments of the pelvis.

This approach helps improve pelvic balance and function while being comfortable for both mother and baby, making it a safe option for prenatal care when performed by a certified chiropractic professional.

Research Supporting Prenatal Chiropractic Care

• A study by Dr. Joan Fallon found that women who received chiropractic care throughout pregnancy experienced a significant reduction in labor time.

• According to Dr. Irvin Henderson, MD, women who received chiropractic care during the third trimester reported being able to carry and deliver their child with much greater comfort.

Choosing a certified prenatal chiropractor ensures your care is safe, gentle, and tailored to support both you and your baby throughout pregnancy.

6. When is the best time for postpartum care?

Motherhood is a beautiful journey, but let’s face it — your body goes through a lot during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. The good news is that chiropractic care can begin at any stage after birth. Some mothers benefit from gentle adjustments within the first few days or even hours post-delivery, particularly if labour positions have led to pelvic imbalance, strain, or discomfort.

That said, the golden period for postpartum recovery is within the first 12 weeks after delivery. During this time, the body is naturally healing and adapting, making it an ideal window to restore alignment, improve function, and prevent longer-term compensations.

7. Benefits of postpartum care.
Postpartum adjustments are designed to support your body as it heals from pregnancy, labor and delivery, and help your body adjust to the new demands of motherhood. Benefits can include:

* Pelvic Realignment: Restoring pelvic balance after delivery. Promoting pelvic health and healing. Most importantly, many mothers report a visible reduction in pelvic width(smaller pelvis), often describing a “two-size down” change after just one to two visits, as alignment is restored and postural tension is reduced.
* Relief from Pain and Tension: Addressing neck, back, and shoulder strain caused by labor and caring for a newborn.
* Improved Recovery: Supporting the nervous system and musculoskeletal system to promote health and healing.
* Better Posture: Helping you feel more comfortable while nursing and constantly holding your baby. Preventing the typical mom back, or hunchback as we age.
